CLC/TC 210 on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The publication of the European Directive on electromagnetic compatibility (89/336/EEC) of products and the associated mandate had triggered CENELEC to ensure the preparation of harmonized standards that are to serve not only as the state of the art but, when listed in the OJEC and used by the manufacturer, give presumption of conformity to the Essential Requirements of the Directive.
To this end CLC/TC 210 was set up with the role not only to coordinate the EMC standardization activities undertaken by the product committees but also to set up a system to encompass EMC activities. This led to the known hierarchical structure of basic, generic and product (family) standards which form the basis of EMC compliance. The system is detailed in CENELEC Guide 24.
Through the IEC/CENELEC cooperation agreement, the EMC generic and product requirements were taken over by IEC and over the years, the latter institute took over the substantial part of EMC standardization. This resulted into the present situation where IEC Committees prepare most of the work, which is then submitted to parallel IEC/CENELEC procedures on the resulting CDV and FDIS, leading to one major principle: to ensure that worldwide standards are transposed into European standards which, in their turn, are used in the legal European framework.

CLC/TC 106X on electromagnetic fields (EMF)
Whilst CLC/TC 210 is dealing with the electromagnetic influence between products, CLC/TC 106X is responsible for the standardization of requirements and tests dealing with the influence of non-ionising electromagnetic fields in the human environment. Together with some product committees, CLC/TC 106X develops harmonized standards in the framework of Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC on the exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields where the exposure levels laid down in this Recommendation are translated into emission requirements of products. The result are standards, most of which are listed in the OJEC in the framework of the LVD (73/23/EEC) and the RTTED (1999/5/EC).

CLC/TC 111X on environmental matters
In the course of 2004 the CLC/BTWG 85-3 "Environmental Standardization" has been turned into CLC/TC 111X "Environment". It was entrusted with the task to deal with environmental aspects for electrical and electronic products and systems, to promote activities in CENELEC relevant to reducing detrimental impacts of electrotechnical activities/products/systems on the natural environment, and to enhance CENELEC's environmental links with the European legal framework.
